The FetHead comes in different versions the Standard, Phantom and Germanium. All of them have slightly different characteristics and are worth checking out if you have a chance to take a listen to them. If you don't have a store close by, I actually found someone who did a comparison between the Standard and the Germanium version with downloadable WAV files.

Of course there are also alternatives in the Mic Activator space like the Cloudlifter.
